9.09 Sides

Oliver is a 7 year old patient. The gown covers him but its clear his torso is very misshapen and he can’t move his neck/shoulders/spine very well. His parents Rob and Lisa are with him. Oliver asks Dr. Smith if he brought it. Dr. Smith shows Oliver the hardware – a telescopic titanium rod with rings attached, he hands it to Oliver. Dr. Smith explains to the parents and tells Oliver he’s going to be like a walking Transformer and that the x-ray guys at the airport are going to go out of their minds. Oliver says its sick. Sick in a good way, Oliver is psyched.

Dr. Simpson - Jenny is in an exam room with Dr. Audrey Simpson. She’s taking Jenny’s BP. Tells her they’ll take it and to undress, cover with paper cloth and she’ll be right back. Dr. Simpson returns and does a vaginal ultrasound. Jenny asks if it looks ok. Dr. Simpson says of course, Jenny has some risk factors but they’re going to watch her like a hawk. A grainy image shows on screen. Dr. Simpson says ‘there we go, hi baby’. They are staring at the image and Jenny smiles.

Dr. Barrett - Dr. Maurer is in a taxi and the phone rings. Its Dr. Barrett in the ER. Tells Dr. Maurer his/her niece is on her way there and the paramedics say she is vomiting blood. Dr. Maurer says Kayla? Dr. Barrett says she’s hypotensive. Dr. Maurer tells the cab driver to turn the cab around.

Trauma room: Kayla is on the gurney. She is conscius, terrified and vomitting blood. Dr. Smith and Dr. Barrett are just beginning to assess her when Dr. Maurer barges in asking how much blood she has lost. Dr. Barrett says at least a liter, liter and a half, hang more. Dr. Maurer says if she lost that much she needs a transfusion and a NG tube. Tells them to move out of the way. Dr. Barrett says “Sir, she’s your niece, step back”.

Kayla starts coughing, Dr. Smith says to suction her. Dr. Maurer says she needs an NG tube and ‘get out of the way son’. Dr. Smith says they have it, Dr. Maurer says get out of the way, Dr. Smith yells “I got it. You hear me?”. Dr. Smith pushes himself in front of Dr. Maurer, staring him straight in the eye. Dr. Maurer grabs Kayla’s hand and backs off. Dr. Barrett watches the exchange as Dr. Smith goes to work.

Claire/Elena - Jessica is trying to get out the front door but her sister Claire and her mother Elena are making it difficult. They’re struggling with the screen door and Claire is trying to pick up Jessica’s skirt. She looks exquisite.

Claire tells her to hold still. Jessica says how can she hold still when she’s walking. Elena tells Jessica to let Claire drive her, Jessica says no. She needs 5 minutes with none of them touching her. That is when they look up and see a stretch limo parked in front of the house with a driver standing by the limo.

Wedding hall – Bride’s anteroom, afternoon. Elena looks furious. Claire is on her phone, says “straight to voice mail” and hangs up.

(Dr. Smith - Alex; Kayla - Adele a nejedná se o neteř, ale o manželku... Dr.Maurer - Webber, doopravdy jedou limuzínou, ne taxíkem... atd. atd.)

Season 9 Episode 10 Sides

Mr. Warren - At the wedding hall Doug is on the phone in the bar area. His father, Mr. Warren, and groomsman join him. He hangs up and goes to the altar area and they follow. He says everything is fine but Ashley was pulled into an emergency surgery. Mr. Warren asks how that is fine, tells Doug he needs to get a handle on this and seize control. Doug asks “of what, claim my woman?”. Mr. Warren says there is a hall full of people waiting and that this is undignified. Doug asks if mom sent him to talk to him which shuts Mr. Warren up because its true. Doug steps up to the altar.

Minister - very short, he just pronounces the couple husband and wife. The bride and groom smile at each other and kiss.

DJ - Also a very short side. Ashley is at the buffet and the DJ asks where the bride and groom are, everybody has been waiting to see the dance. Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for the newlyweds. Applause all around as the couple begins to dance.

Desk Clerk - A desk clerk tries to show guest their room on a map while ignoring a very drunk Dina and Peter. Dina is saying she put money in the machine and pushed the button and nothing. The guests appear annoyed. The desk clerk asks how much Dina put in, she says $2 and the clerk takes $2 from his pocket and gives it to her, says “OK?” and returns to the hotel guests.

Peter loudly asks Dina what she did with the room key, he gave it to her before they left the room. Peter has the attention of the clerk and the guests. Dina apologies. The desk clerk comes back to them and asks what the problem is. Dina is weepy and says she lost the key, Peter turns to the clerk with tears in his eyes. He tells the clerk he is sorry, its been a long day and they are both obviously very drunk. Peter sobs. The clerk asks the room number, checks the computer, says “Jack Shouse?” & Peter nods then swipes a new key and gives it to Peter. Peter thanks him.

Jack Shouse - Inside Peter and Dina’s room we hear them laughing. The door opens and there stands Jack Shouse. Jack says sorry, but then realizes its his room. Peter is raiding the mini bar and Dina comes out of the bathroom with a robe over her dress. Dina sees Jack and says “excuse you”. Jack says he thinks its his room, Dina asks if it looks like his room and Jack says yes. Dina tells him to quit running his mouth and get out. Jack says that’s his suitcase, Dina flings a can of almonds at the door and Jack flees.

Stuart/Rage/Gasoline/The Hammer - Harley gang. Stuart is the accountant but like family to them. Gasoline is the Big Bad Biker Mama (how she’s described). Its a lot of back and forth with the tough talking biker patient (mainly Gasoline), initially refusing treatment then agreeing if she can see Stuart. Doesn’t get to see Stuart and is pissed. Collapses in the hallway, has surgery. Gets to see Stuart (who also had surgery) and gives him the patch which makes him one of the gang.

The side with The Hammer has Dr. Jordan (male intern) with Dr. Maurer in the room. The Hammer tells Dr. Jordan there’s no way he’s doing that right, call the broad over, he’s not going to suffer because he’s avoiding his hold lady. Dr. Jordan says ‘my what?’. The Hammer says he sees the way she looks at him, Dr. Jordan says she’s not looking at him, The Hammer says not now, she’s now ignoring which means she really digs him. Dr. Jordan stabs him with the needle, The Hammer yells OW!, Dr. Mauer comes over and asks what is going on. The Hammer says the kid is a menace. Dr. Mauer asks The Hammer to calm down. Explains its a teaching hospital and says she would like to correct Dr. Jordan’s technique, ok? Dr. Mauer goes behind Dr. Jordan, starts guiding his hand and says ‘like that’. Dr. Mauer rubs Dr. Jordan’s shoulder and says ‘great work, keep it up’ and leaves. The Hammer says ‘heh, keep IT up’.

Season 9 Episode 11 Sides

There are 4 sides out for episode 9.11. They are for 2 patients and their mothers so I’ll do one summary for the patient+mother sides.

James and Dana - James is 14 years old and he’s the patient. He’s at the hospital with his parents Dana and Phil (there is no side for Phil yet but will likely come out soon) and suffers from the genetic disorder scoliosis (he has twisted hips, a curved back). Dr. Smith is examining him alongside two interns. Dr. Smith shows pictures of James over the years where each surgery improved his appearance and says that Dr. Robertson performed 5 surgeries. James says Dr. Robertson performed the surgeries to make him less weird looking. Dana interjects but James says even Dr. Robertson said he was weird looking and his parents worshipped him. Dana tells Dr. Smith that Dr. Robertson was great to James and she can’t believe he’s gone. Dr. Smith says he knows it’s not easy to trust the new guy. Dana replies that Dr. Smith was Dr. Robertson’s guy and that’s all they need to know. Dr. Smith says that based on the scans he suggests they use hooks and wires to connect the rod they’ll place in James spine as opposed to screws. The hooks allow for the spine to heal less rigidly. Dana and Phil looked scared and ask if it’s better why didn’t Dr. Robertson suggest that and Dr. Smith replies that James has grown more than Dr. Robertson was anticipating. Dr. Harris arrives, apologizes for being late and asks ‘what’s up?’ Dana says Dr. Smith was explaining the new plan.

Dr. Smith arrives to take James to surgery. James is with his hot girlfriend and she’s giving him a long, sexy kiss and then leaves. Dr. Smith is a little speechless. James says he knows, his girlfriend is hot and that Dr. Smith is wondering how he does it. Dr. Smith admits to it and James explains that Dr. Robertson telling him he was weird looking wasn’t him being a jerk. It was just that surgery was only ever going to take him so far and he would never look completely normal which meant he was going to have to develop some moves to get women. Dr. Smith asks if Dr. Robertson gave him tips. James says no, Dr. Robertson said normal moves would never work for him and that he had to come up with some of his own so now he blinds women with his amazing personality, they don’t even notice his weird spine. Dr. Smith says it looks like it’s working. James replies that he does all right. Not being weird looking would be cool but no pressure. Dr. Smith laughs. It’s hard not to like this kid.

Taylor and Rebecca- Taylor is a quiet, nervous 19 year old and Rebecca is her mother and described as a take charge mother from hell. In the ER, Dr. Jacobson (in the side for Taylor the name used is Dr. Smith) arrives and finds Taylor and her mom Rebecca. He/She tells them that Taylor isn’t pregnant. Taylor looks up, nervously smiles and starts biting her nails. Rebecca says of course she’s not pregnant. She lives at home, she knows better than to bring boys home and knows that she needs to focus on her school work. Rebecca asks Taylor to confirm. Taylor continues to bite her nails and Rebecca tells her to get her fingers out of her mouth. Dr. Jacobson begins to examine Taylor who indeed does look pregnant. Dr. Jacobson asks if that hurts and if she’s been constipated. Taylor nods slightly and Rebecca tells her to speak up. Taylor says yes. Rebecca asks ‘yes, what? yes it hurts, yes you’re constipated?’ and says the doctors aren’t mind readers. Before Taylor can answer Rebecca says she’s not constipated, she’s just throwing up. Dr. Jacobson asks Rebecca to step outside while they examine Taylor. Rebecca begins to say Taylor doesn’t mind but Dr. Jacobson is already ushering her out. Dr. Jacobson turns back to Taylor who stops biting her nails to say “that was awesome” and goes back to chewing her nails.

Season 9 Episode 12 Sides

Sides summary for episode 9.12:

Barry - Dr. Marks meets the ambulance, the paramedic jumps out and says the patient (Barry) is 55 years old and suffered minor head trauma and two small lacerations on his neck. Barry says he fell off a ladder while trying to paint the shutters. Dr. Marks asks Barry if he lost consciousness in the field. Barry says he didn't fall in a field, he fell in his yard. They wheel him away.

Pilot (interior plane - day) - Max is in his seat. It's just him and the pilot. Max says "Let's go" and asks what are they waiting for. Pilot replies that he got word to hold a minute. Pilot smiles at Max who just looks out the window.

Surgeon - (interior OR) - A Surgeon turns to his colleague, keeping his eye on Dr. Smith. Surgeon asks if he sees what he did there and says to never do that. The colleague nods.

Nyah (No lines. Action only) - Nyah is an adorable and scared 6 year old patient. She's sitting in bed while Dr. Williams examines her. Dr. Williams asks her to take another deep breath and demonstrates. Nyah takes a labored breath. Dr. Williams says that is great and asks for one more. Dr. Williams demonstrates again and smiles at Nyah who smiles back nervously and takes another breath.

Brie (maternity patient room - morning) Dr. Smith is meeting with pregnant patient, Bree, and her wife Heidi (both early 30s). Brie is in pain and says it's like a knife is stabbing her. Heidi says it's the baby who wants to come early. Brie lets out a scream, she's really in pain. Dr. Smith looks at the fetal monitor and says the baby's heart rate is good. Brie asks then what is going on. Dr. Smith answers that the labs should help explain. As Brie is in pain, Dr. Smith goes through the labs.

Heidi (maternity patient room - morning) - Dr. Smith is meeting with pregnant patient, Brie, and her wife Heidi. Brie is clearly in pain. Heidi says it's the baby wanting to come early and asks Dr. Smith if this is early labor. She says if it is she's going to need to call her sister to bring her makeup bag because she is determined to look cuter than the baby in the pictures. Brie whimpers annoyed and in pain. Heidi apologizes to her and explains to Dr. Smith that she babbles when she's nervous which Brie, who is the quiet one, hates. Dr. Smith looks at the fetal monitor and says the baby's heart rate is good. Heidi says to Brie "Did you hear that, honey? The baby is fine."

(Maternity hallway outside Brie's room) Dr. Smith updates a freaked out Heidi. Dr. Smith says that Brie's heart is very weak and it looks like there is a leak in her valve. Heidi asks if it's because of the baby. Dr. Smith says no, it's completely unrelated to the pregnancy. Brie needs to have surgery to repair the heart valve before the bleeding gets worse. Brie is terrified and asks if suddenly her wife needs surgery and what about the baby. Dr. Smith says the baby is perfectly fine for now. Heidi is trying so hard not to lose it.

(Brie's patient room) Dr. Smith informs Heidi that they couldn't fix the leak without putting both Brie and the baby in danger. Brie looks as though she might be sick and asks what happens now. Dr. Smith says they are doing damage control but the baby is running out of time and they need to start preparation for a C-section. Heidi asks if that can be done. Dr. Smith replies that it's risky but if it's successful it can buy some time until Brie's heart gets stronger. Heidi says IF her heart gets stronger. Dr. Smith confirms. Heidi says she went out to get balloons and came back and her wife is dying. The last thing she said to Brie was that she was going to be fine. Heidi pleads with Dr. Smith to fix Brie and breaks into sobs.

Jimmy and Carla (Jimmy's patient room) - Jimmy (29) is in bed and is a loveably carefree blue collar guy. His sister, Carla (30s), is with him and they both light up when they see Dr. Martin. Dr. Martin greets Jimmy and Carla saying it's good to see them. Carla intercepts a high five and wraps Dr. Martin in a hug. Carla says to Dr. Martin to please tell her he's not still married. Dr. Martin says "afraid so". Jimmy tells a nurse to ignore his sister, she has no social boundaries. The siblings exchange insults but it's clear there is a lot of love between them. Carla asks Jimmy if he thinks the nurse cares, unless she's the wife. Worried, Carla asks the nurse if she's the wife. The nurse smiles and shakes her head - no. Dr. Martin does a quick exam on Jimmy and asks if the pain is still bad. Jimmy says no, he's tough. Carla tells Dr. Martin to not listen to Jimmy because he can barely get off the couch and she has to wait on him like he's the boy prince. Dr. Martin asks if there are any other symptoms he should know about like nausea, vomiting. Carla says being a giant pain in her ass. Dr. Martin says they are going to run some labs and scans and see if the cancer has progressed. Carla concerned, asks if he means it could be worse. Dr. Martin answers that they'll have a clearer idea after the scans.

Jimmy and Carla are mid-argument when Dr. Martin walks in with scans. Next to Jimmy's bed is a giant cookie in a gift basket with a "Get well soon" written on it. Carla says their cousin Dora sent it but Jimmy can't eat it before surgery. Jimmy says he's starving and now he has to look at a giant cookie he can't have. He keeps telling Carla to eat it. Carla asks if he's saying that so that he can make fat jokes when it all goes to her hips. Jimmy tells her to throw it away then. Carla says that's a waste and tells Dr. Martin to take it because he could afford the calories. Dr. Martin says the cancer has progressed since the last scan. Jimmy asks if Dr. Martin can still operate. Dr. Martin levels with him and says the risks they talked about before, like Jimmy not surviving, are much higher now. Jimmy takes in the grim news. Dr. Martin says that Jimmy should take some time and decide if he still wants to go ahead with the surgery. Jimmy says he's taken time and asks what is his other option, sit around and wait to die? Carla walks out of the room visible upset. Jimmy says he's dying and she's making it about herself. Dr. Martin follows Carla.

(Hall just outside Jimmy's room) Carla breaks down but reigns it in slightly when she see Dr. Martin. Carla apologizes for running out like that but she can let Jimmy see her cry because she would never hear the end of it. Dr. Martin says it's okay and puts his hand on her shoulder. Carla wipes away tears and says the day Dr. Smith was supposed to operate was the day she thought she was losing her brother. She knows it's horrible thing to say but she was relieved when the insurance didn't go through because it gave her more time with her brother. These past months have been the best they've ever had. She laughs and says she's ready, they both are. She just couldn't let him see her cry. Carla gathers herself and returns to Jimmy's room.

(Jimmy's room) Dr. Martin checks on Jimmy post-op. He's still asleep and Carla is at his bedside. She asks when is Jimmy going to wake up. Dr. Martin says everybody's different but it shouldn't be too long. Carla notices some crumbs in her lap and brushes them off. She says she's a mess. She ate Jimmy's big cookie because she is a stress eater. She leans over her brother and says that's what he gets when he keeps her worried for hours. At the sound of her voice Jimmy winces, Dr. Martin shines a pen light in his eyes. Dr. Martin asks if Jimmy can follow the light with his eyes. Jimmy is groggy and he's not responding. Carla yells at him to answer Dr. Martin. Jimmy winces and moans in grief. Carla asks if he can hear her. Jimmy asks who could ignore that voice. Carla laughs, hugs her brother and her laughs turn to sobs.

ETA: A couple of new side came out.

Paramedic Matthew Taylor (30s) - Paramedic Matthew jumps out of the ambulance to unload a gurney as Dr. Smith stands by. Matthew states the patient's name is Barry Winston, 55, has a minor closed head wound and his vital signs are stable. Barry speaks up saying he fell off a damn ladder while he was painting the damn house. Matthew says he was going to say all that but with fewer damns. Dr. Smith asks Barry if he lost consciousness in the field and Barry answers he didn't fall in a field, he fell in his yard. Matthew says that Barry has been conscious the whole time. Dr. Smith pushes the gurney away.

(Trauma room) - Dr. Smith is with a patient and Paramedic Matthew. Matthew is informing Dr. Smith about the patient saying his BP was 110 over 70 and there was significant dashboard damage. Matthew is about to leave when Dr. Smith grabs him by the arm and asks him to start over. Matthew asks if he should start from the beginning. Dr. Smith just wants the last few details. Matthew explains that there was significant damage to the interior of the vehicle, specifically the dashboard. Dr. Smith says it's the basic law of motion meaning the impact to the dashboard has to be transmitted to the patient's body. Matthew agrees and says that based on his knowledge of mechanisms of injury and rapid forward deceleration, he found that there was significant amount of damage to the interior of the vehicle. Dr. Smith says that Matthew said that part already. Matthew replies he has said all of it already. Dr. Smith tells him to forget it, thankfully he stabilized the pelvis in the field. Matthew is a little sheepish at the sudden positive attention. He starts saying it really wasn't a big -- Dr. Smith cuts him off saying she's going to start the exam. ABCs first, as always. Matthew says he'll see himself out. Matthew goes throwing back a look at Dr. Smith.

(ER nurses station -night) Dr. Smith is exhausted and is seated at the nurses' station with her head on the desk. Matthew says excuse me and he doesn't mean to interrupt. Dr. Smith asks if he needs something. Matthew says yes, kinda. He's been watching her and she never seems to slow down. He thinks she could use a break and asks her if she wants to grab a coffee. Dr. Smith is a little bit blindsided. Matthew says he probably shouldn't have led with the "watching you" thing because now she thinks he's some kind of creeper. He says he's not a creeper unless she's inclined to have coffee with creepers. If so, he totally creeps, like all the time. Matthew is kind of adorable.

OB Nurse - Chaos. Dr. Clark and an OB Nurse struggle to stabilize a coding patient. OB Nurse says the fetal heart rate is stable but the mother is hypotensive. Dr. Clark orders to push pressors.

Season 9 Episode 13 Sides

Brock - Dr. Marks tends to the patient as skate rat, Brock, follows them in. Dr. Marks asks Brock what is the patient’s name,he says Roger and asks if he’ll be okay. Dr. Marks says they are doing everything they can.

(OR waiting room) Dr. Marks find Brock waiting and he’s been worried. Brock asks how is Roger doing, Dr. Marks says it looks like he’s going to make it. Brock says that’s great and that he’s so relieved. Dr. Marks asks if Roger’s family is there. Brock says there are like dozens of family members there. He nods towards a group of people gathered with Ron and Lillian (Roger’s parents) and various siblings and relatives. Brock says he and Roger would hang out practically every day and he never knew Roger was a hardcore naturopath. He never talked about it. Dr. Marks guesses that it might have just been a personal thing. Brock says maybe, but if you believe in something so hard that you would die for it, would you keep it a secret? Wouldn’t you tell your bestfriend? Dr. Marks asks Brock if he wants to wait up at the CCU. Brock says no, he has to get out of there but asks if Dr. Marks will call him when Roger gets out. Dr. Marks says sure, no problem and Brock leaves.

Ron & Lillian - Roger’s parents – (Waiting room) Dr. Thomson tells Roger’s parents that the cancer has progressed, the tumor is inoperable but they have some options. Lillian says he’ll pull through. Dr. Thompson says Roger may not have much time but what would really help is chemotherapy. Ron refuses chemo. Dr. Thompson says if they’re worried about the side effect that he/she can assure that– Ron says it’s not the side effects. They just believe that life is a gift and they don’t try to sustain it by taking chemicals. They’ve seen amazing miracles through natural healing. If it’s their son’s time… Lillian starts crying and Ron comforts her. These people aren’t monsters, they just have their beliefs, this is painful for them. Dr. Thompson says just to be clear, they are refusing to allow them to administer chemotherapy and radiation to their son. Ron says that getting chemo would not save Roger’s life, it would condemn him. Living with those chemicals in his body would be so much worse for Roger than dying without them.

(CCU – day) Roger is coding. Dr. Thompson runs in pushing through Roger’s family to get to him. Lillian pleads with Dr. Thompson to help him. Dr. Thompson tells them all to get out and says “charge to 200!” Lillian and Ron are pushed from the room.

Flight Nurse- (exterior breezeway) The Nurse pushes a bloody man (40s) into the ER. Nurse says the man has a deep chest laceration, he’s hypotensive and tachycardic. Dr. Davis asks if the patient was talking. Nurse says he/she doesn’t know if there is tracheal damage, he was never stridorous. Suddenly the man leans his head back and coughs.

Logger’s wife - (Post-op room) The patient is on a respirator and teary friends by his side. A woman, clearly the wife, is holding Dr. Hall in a bear hug and sobbing on her saying thank you repeatedly and God bless you.

Dr. Redmond - Dr. Thompson spots a doctor coming out of the OR down the hall and shouts out “Tom!” Dr. Thompson hurries to catch up to Dr. Redmond. Dr. Thompson says that he saw little Howie when he was dropping Max at daycare and that he’s cute. Redmond says thanks, Howie’s a kick. Johnston says Max is at that age when everything goes in his mouth. Redmond replies that they’re not quite there yet. Johnston tells him to just wait, legos, magnets… if it’s a choking hazard, they’ll find it. Redmond is starting to look a little terrified. Johnston says lucky for them there are trained nurses in the daycare. Redmond says that’s for sure but then asks “aren’t we cutting back on nurses?” Johnston says that’s what he wanted to talk to Redmond about. Johnston explains that he knows that Dermatology has two fellows and if they cut back… Johnston takes Redmond under his arm and leads him around the corner.

Dr. Bob Richardson - (empty patient room) Dr. Davis eyes Bob, untrusting. Dr. Davis says, “We gotta talk, Hal.” Bob corrects Dr. Davis saying it’s Bob. Richardson. Dr. Bob Richardson. Dr. Davis says he/she has a little problem. Bob answers that he’s there to help. Dr. Davis says how about he just do that. Bob doesn’t understand. Dr. Davis tells Bob to not question his/her medical decisions. If he/she orders an intern to hang a drip, he/she wants a drip. Bob says that Dr. Davis must have not read the latest studies which show that his suggestion is more effective. Dr. Davis asks if Bob has a lot of time to read, hanging out in the attendings lounge with his Snickers? Dr. Davis tells Bob he might want to check out the December New England Journal of– Dr. Davis is about to finish when a nurse rushes in.

Dr. Davis looks at the flo machine calling out orders as an intern charts. Dr. Davis says they can try to stimulate blood production by giving crythropoietin. Bob says they can also give IV Iron dextran. Dr. Davis says he/she knows. The intern says they can give the patient blood products but they can’t administer chemotherapy and asks how is that logical. Dr. Davis they have to respect his wishes. The intern says, “so…there’s nothing we can do?” Dr. Davis says yes there is, they can go talk to the family. Dr. Davis heads out and Bob wishes him/her luck.

Dr. McDowell - (Skills Lab) Dr. McDowell stands at the front of the room indicating diagrams drawn on the dry-erase board behind him. Dr. McDowell says there you have it, a technique he’s developed through years of highly focused research. He eats, sleeps and breathes gall bladders and after today something tells him they will too. Dr. Smith raises his hand and says that he has also developed a technique. Dr. McDowell says he sure it’s wonderful but his point here is to standardize the way you approach a gall bladder. It’s clean, quick and efficient. Dr. Smith says he supposes. Dr. McDowell challenges Dr. Smith to a friendly competition. The first surgeon to complete 50 gall bladder repairs using this technique will win bragging rights, the respect of their peers and THIS sweet baby (Dr. McDowell holds up a fleece sweatshirt).

(Skills Lab) Surgeons are all at work as Dr. McDowell moves from station to station. Dr. McDowell checks Dr. Davis’s work and says excellent, 49 more to go. Dr. McDowell stops at Dr. Smith’s station, he is struggling. Dr. McDowell says that’s the idea but– Dr. Smith asks “But? But what?”, and tells Dr. McDowell to not beat around the bush and tell him what he’s doing wrong. Dr. McDowell tells him to look over at Dr. Davis who is working calmly and diligently. Dr. McDowell tells him to see how she doesn’t rush. When done properly, the technique moves quickly on its own. If you rush, you risk future complications. Dr. McDowell tells him to do it over and take his time. Dr. McDowell goes over to Dr. Davis, checking over her work. He gives her a big grin and says he couldn’t have done it better himself. Dr. Davis shouts out “Yes!” Dr. McDowell says people often ask him how he can focus so much time on gall bladders and maintain this level of excitement. Now you see it, perfection is exciting.

(skills lab) Dr. McDowell checks Dr. Smith’s work and says it’s very good but then something looks wrong to McDowell. Dr. McDowell says he doesn’t understand, where are the sutures? Dr. Smith says he wanted to give Dr. McDowell a look at the Smith Method. Dr. McDowell isn’t amused, says it’s lovely but– Dr. Smith says “isn’t it?” and begins to explain what he did. Dr. McDowell cuts him off saying this method will no longer be performed. Dr. Smith replies that it’s because Dr. McDowell will make sure of it. It’s clear Dr. Smith is pushing Dr. McDowell’s buttons whose cheerful demeanor is now long gone. Dr. McDowell asks if Dr. Smith doesn’t think that every patient is entitled to the same standard of care. Dr. Smith answers, how good can that care be when they see 50 patients a day? Dr. McDowell says he’s missing the point! The patients don’t matter! All the surgeons in the room stop working and stare at Dr. McDowell who starts back-pedaling. Dr. McDowell says that’s not what he meant. He is simply saying that they are only worried about gall bladders right now. Dr. McDowell looks at Dr. Davis’s work and says it’s quite good and everyone should follow her lead. Surgeons across the room get back to work as Dr. McDowell retreats to the front of the room and busies himself with paperwork.

Simmi - (Simmi’s patient room) Dr. Smith stands at the end of Simmi’s bed. She’s listening to her headphones and ignoring him. He gestures for her to take off the headphones. Simmi reaches up and instead of taking them off she mocks Dr. Smith’s gesture in a way that suggests he has a mental disability. Dr. Smith yells at her to take the headphones off. She does. Dr. Smith regroups, smiles and says they have got to get her up and moving because today is the day. Simmi says maybe tomorrow is the day. Dr. Smith tells her that if she doesn’t get up her knees may not heal right. Simmi says she doesn’t care. Dr. Smith says he knows this is hard but she’s 12 and she talks as if her whole life is over. Simmi replies as if Dr. Smith knows what her life was. Dr. Smith says he knows she was into soccer. Simmi says she wasn’t “into” soccer and calls Dr. Smith stupid. She says soccer was her career since she was 4 years old. She trained 4 to 5 hours a day, more on the weekends, was ranked number one in the Youth Championship Nationals the previous year. When her knee got weak she trained through it so they both went. Now she’s nothing, she’s number zero. Dr. Smith says no, she’s not. Maybe that part of her life is over but she’s got time to do all sorts of things. Sarcastically, Simmi replies that they said if the surgery was successful she might be able to ride a bike which is as good as having your face on a Slurpee cup, right? She holds up her hand but Dr. Smith doesn’t return it. Simmi says that Dr. Smith might understand if he had ever been great at something, if he was the best at something. So yeah, her life is over at twelve. Now she gets to go to school and ride a bike and wait to die. Simmi puts her headphones back on.

(Scrub room) Dr. Smith, stern-faced, stands by Simmi. Dr. Smith tells her he needs her to take his hand and he’ll help her sit up. Simmi says she doesn’t give him permission to touch her or she’ll scream. Dr. Smith tells Simmi that if she doesn’t move he’s going to have to say she’s acting against medical advice. They’ll discharge her, she’ll go home and probably never walk again. Simmi asks why does he care. Dr. Smith says he cares because he’s her doctor and he’s worked very hard to help her. Simmi says wouldn’t it suck if he didn’t help her. If he went through all the training, became a big doctor, came up with the plan, did the operation just right and perfect so that she could walk again and she didn’t. Simmi asks Dr. Smith if he’d feel hopeless. If he’d feel like nothing matters, like no matter how much you care, how hard you work, how badly you want something you’re never going to get it because everything is totally out of his control. She asks Dr. Smith if he feels that.

(Simmi’s room) Dr. James sits on Simmi’s bed and Simmi eyes her coldly. Dr. James tells Simmi she needs to get up and take a few steps and remember how it feels. Dr. James says she knows how hard it is but Simmi wants this. Simmi says Dr. James doesn’t know what she wants. Dr. James tells Simmi she can be scared, she can be pissed and lay there like a garden slug until she dies for all she cares but, Simmi will not become a monster who takes people down with her. She will treat people with respect and kindness starting with herself. She’ll start by standing up and she’ll do it by the time Dr. James counts to three or she’ll drag Simmi’s ass out of the bed. Simmi stares at her terrified. Dr. James starts counting and Simmi starts moving with Dr. James’s help. Simmi’s moved her legs off the bed and takes Dr. James’s hands. Dr. James’s counting changes from scolding to supporting as she helps Simmi to her feet who is shaking and terrified. Dr. James says good and asks if Simmi wants to take a step. Simmi says okay. She takes a wobbly, frightened step and is crying but smiling at Dr. James too.

The Simmi case seems to be Alex/Arizona with Alex being Dr. Smith (or possibly Callie being Dr. Smith) and Arizona being Dr. James. The Roger case is harder to tell but with the bestfriends part maybe it’s some anvil for Meredith/Cristina, with one of them keeping a secret from the other.

Season 9 Episode 14 Sides

Sides are Brian, Jess and Daniel. Dates are listed as 12/14 – 1/9

Day – a photographer is talking to Brian (18) and Jess (19), a cute, sweet, young transgender couple. Dr. Smith watches. Larry the photographer directs them, says could you move a little closer to her—him? Brian explains “I’m the him. She’s the her. Even though I was born a her and Jess was born a him. I get its confusing”. Photographer says ready – 1,2,3 and snaps the photo.

They’re at UW together, Jess is a sophomore and Brian is a freshman. Brian says they met because of Dr. Smith. He had an appointment booked at age 14 to see how old he needed to be to start the process and Dr. Smith told about a transgender support group, met Jess there. Jess thought no way would he notice, Brian says impossible not to – they’re so in love. Larry asks what is today’s surgery, is it full gender reassignment? Brian says no, nothing that drastic. Today they are taking off the boobs.

In the hallway, Jess and Brian’s dad Daniel are having an argument. Daniel blames Jess. The go back and forth with Jess correcting Daniel with “HE” every time Daniel says “she”. Dr. Smith approaches and asks if everything is ok. Daniel turns on Dr. Smith, sizes him up and asks if he’s the one that is going to hack his daughter into pieces. Grabs him, pushes him backwards and is irrational and pissed during the encounter. Slams Dr. Smith into the wall.

Daniel is sitting by the vending machines flanked by security guards. He says he is sorry that he only learned of the surgery the night before via email. He’s at a loss. His world has been undone. Dr. Smith tells the guards they can go. Dr. Smith says that a surgery like this is big for any parent and if its the first time Daniel is hearing about it he needs to take a breath. Brian approaches and asks Daniel what is he doing there.

Brian’s Room: Daniel is now with Brian and Jess. Dr. Smith is with them. Daniel says Brian is barely 18 and what if you wake up and realize its a mistake? Brian says he’s not being trendy. Its not a haircut or tattoo, its my life, its me. Daniel says he’s just asking to wait, what is the rush? Jess says that Brian feels like he’s dying inside, they both do. Daniel asks Jess to give them a moment alone but Brian wants Jess to stay. They continue, Jess interjects again, Daniel says “for gods sake her name is Brianna!”. Brian yells at him to get out now. Get out, get out, get out. Dr. Smith says “you heard him” and Daniel leaves.

Waiting area, night: Dr. Smith approaches Jess, Jess notices Daniel hovering a few steps away listening. Daniel apologizes and says he wanted to know how everything went then starts to leave. Jess tells him she is the one that sent the email from Brian’s account. She explains that Brian wasn’t going to tell him. Jess knows they don’t talk much but Brian talks about Daniel a lot. He admires Daniel, wants to grow up and be like him, he’s his dad and Jess thought he should know. Continues that Brian just wants Daniel to love him the way Brian loves him.

A beat then Daniel takes some cash and asks Jess if they are ok on rent, says its all the cash he has on him then starts to go. Jess asks him if he wants to be there when Brian wakes up. Daniel stops, looking heartbroken and defeated. He shakes his head no and walks away.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

More sides have been released so continuing with what WindSprints started…

Larry - He’s the photographer from the Brian and Jess sides. First scene is the one where he’s taking photos of the teen couple summarized previously.

(interior OR – nostril enlargement surgery) Larry watches Dr. Smith slice into the patient’s nose. He unimpressed and asked Dr. Smith what else he/she has scheduled for that day. Dr. Smith answers lots of cool stuff, next is the intern seminar and at 11 is the tongue forking surgery. Dr. Smith explains that tongue forking is when they split the tongue down the middle to create two pieces of flesh. Larry looks disgusted and asks if both pieces of tongue can move. Dr. Smith says once it’s healed, yes. Larry asks if there’s a medical purpose for forking a tongue. Dr. Smith says no, it’s purely a cosmetic procedure to help one look more like a lizard.

(Brian’s OR) Larry is with Dr. Hall and Amrita (another photographer). The OR is bustling getting prepped and Brian is on the table. Dr. Hall says it’s just a matter of time until Brian is ready for surgery. Larry asks Dr. Hall if he/she usually does this all on his/her own. Dr. Hall says all the autonomy is the beauty of working with Dr. Smith. Larry asks when are they going to see Dr. Smith again because, no offense, they are trailing him not Dr. Hall. Dr. Smith walks in.

Amrita - Dr. Caine walks down a hallway trailed closely by Amrita (a photographer) and he looks completely annoyed. He asks Amrita if she’s with him all day. She answers that she just wants to get to know him, see him in his element because it’s important they choose the right ambassador for their brand. She tells Dr. Caine to hold as he is adjusting his stethoscope around his neck because she wants to get a photo of that. Dr. Smith walks up and asks who is the creeper. Amrita holds out her hand to Dr. Smith and says she does public image assessment for the Board. She takes more photos.

Dr. Caine approaches a bed in the NICU where a tiny baby is asleep. The baby has a large bag sewn onto her abdomen and suspended over the bed from above. Dr. Caine starts gently squeezing the bag. Amrita asks if she’s looking at a bag of organs. Dr. Caine explains that they have been gradually compressing the organs a little each day to help them fit back inside the body. Leslie, the baby’s mother, says imagine not getting to hold your baby for six weeks. Dr. Caine says good news, they should be able to finally close the abdomen today. Leslie’s ecstatic and rushes around the bed to pull Dr. Caine into a spontaneous bear hug. Amrita tells them to hold, Leslie and Dr. Caine freeze mid-hug and it’s lasting awkwardly too long as Amrita steps around to get a better angle to take the photo. Amrita thanks them and asks Leslie to sign the release.

Dr. Caine barrels into a hallway and turns on Amrita. He tells Amrita if she wants to follow him all day that’s her deal, he doesn’t have a say in that, but he will not have her taking photos of his patients. Amrita tries to explain but Dr. Caine cuts her off saying he doesn’t care, from now on she doesn’t take photos, she’s a freaking shadow. He asks her if she got it. Amrita says he’s protective of his patients, passionate and that she likes it. Dr. Caine says forget it, she’s waiting in the hall. He takes off.

Amrita and Larry (the photographer) are in Brian’s patient room and they are talking to him and Jess (the transgendered couple). Dr. Caine is there and is trying to get Amrita out of the room. Amrita tells him that if Larry gets to stay then so does she. Amrita focuses back on Jess and Brian who tell her they’re at UW together, Jess is a sophomore, Brian is a freshman. Amrita asks them if that’s where they met. Brian says no, they met because of Dr. Caine who told him about a transgender support group a few years ago and that’s where he met Jess. Amrita beams at Dr. Caine and says he really changed Brian’s life.

(Organ baby’s OR) Dr. Caine is scrubbed into surgery on Leslie’s baby. Amrita is there watching closely and asks what he’s doing now. He says “You mind not asking me questions when my hands are inside a patient?” Amrita then asks a nurse what Dr. Caine is doing. Dr. Caine sighs and explains he’s checking the organs and then placing each inside the cavity. Amrita says making the child whole again, piece by piece and starts taking photos. Dr. Caine says he’ll then sew the kid up and create a belly button. Amrita says he doesn’t miss a detail and Dr. Caine tells her it’s pretty standard. Amrita replies that he’s a humble man.

ER Nurse - Hannah is in an ER bay. An ER Nurse pops her head in and says she’s sorry for the wait but they’ll get a doctor to her just as soon as possible. She smiles, apologetic, and leaves.

Intern Gary - Intern Gary arrives, greets Anita, introduces himself and apologizes for keeping her waiting. Anita says he really didn’t. Gary says her time is valuable and she wouldn’t be there if she wasn’t experiencing some pain or discomfort. He apologizes if they exacerbated that with the wait. Anita says she got there like half a minute ago but Gary’s got his face in an iPad, poking at it. He asks her to spell her name, she does, he continues by saying they know she has a lot options for her health care management and they’re honored she chose them. Gary asks her how she is feeling today. Anita starts saying that for about 24 hours, Gary cuts her off and apologizes. He says he’s going to put it another way and asks her what brought her in today. Anita says what’s wrong with asking her how she feels. Gary answers that it could take them down the wrong road and because Anita’s time is valuable to them, they don’t want to get off on any tangents. Anita says if he asks her how she’s feeling she’ll tell him she’s been feeling blue but she can’t talk to her husband about it so she’s been smoking cigarettes and now she’s experiencing shortness of breath. If he asks her what brought her in today she’s just going to say shortness of breath and he’d miss the whole cigarette connection. Gary says he asks about smoking on screen 2 and holds up his iPad on which the screen says “Do you smoke?” Anita says fine, whatever. Gary says “let me get back to screen one” but the screen freezes. He says it’s technical difficulties so he’ll have to exit the system and take them back to the top. Anita tells him it’s all right and for him to take his time. Gary says he can’t really do that because they’ve only got 15 minutes together today. He says “here we go” and asks her to spell her name again. Anita looks at him like he’s insane.

Dr. Allen - Annie is surrounded by complaining doctors. Dr.Allen says they’re under major pressure to focus on profits at the expense of patient care. Last month he/she had to do a cardiac cath on a patient without heart disease and it’s putting the patient at risk for no reason. Dr. Collier says that if you decide to go crazy and think for yourself, they know. Dr. Allen says he/she swears the walls have ears. Another doctor arrives.

Dr. Boyd - A bunch of interns wait for the elevator. Jennifer sidles up to them and says, louder than necessary, 15 minutes a patient, can a doctor learn anything in that little time? The interns know Jennifer doesn’t belong there, they’re suspicious. Dr. Boyd asks if she’s visiting a patient. Jennifer answers that she’s with the Board and wanted to get their feedback about the job performance and see if they have any concerns. Dr. Byd asks “Really?”, Jennifer puts on her best smile and answers “Really.” The elevator arrives and instead of getting on it the interns step aside with Jennifer.

Jennifer is surrounded by doctors complaining. Dr. Boyd says they’re supposed to see twice the patients in half the hours and there’s no physician advocacy, they have no say in anything. Another doctor arrives.

Dr. Collier - A bunch of interns wait for the elevator. Annie sidles up to them and says, louder than necessary, 15 minutes a patient, can a doctor learn anything in that little time? Dr. Collier answers that you get really efficient. Annie asks if he/she is really that efficient. The interns start to get suspicious. Annie says she works for the Board and just wanted to know if they had any complaints. The elevator arrives but the interns and Dr. Collier stay with Annie suddenly interested in what she has to say.

Annie is surrounded by doctors. Dr. Smith says they have no say in anything at all. Dr. Collier says that if you decide to go crazy and think for yourself, they know, like instantly. Another doctor arrives.

Dr. Giles - Dr. Giles arrives and he’s the face on the posters and brochures around the hospital. Dr. Giles asks “Are you the Board member?” Dr. Caine introduces himself as “Dr. Caine”. Dr. Giles says “Jaime Caine?” Dr. Caine asks if he knows him. Dr. Giles says no, he’s a neuro guy just like Dr. Caine. He says he’s read all about Dr. Caine’s work and he didn’t realize he’d stopped practicing. He asks Dr. Caine if he works for the Board. Dr. Caine says yes, he needed to mix it up a little. Dr. Giles nods as though he understands.

The crowd of complaining doctors has dispersed and now it’s just Dr. Giles and Dr. Caine. Dr. Giles says he was going to try a similar research project and kind of pick up where Dr. Caine left off but now he’s a PR rep and doesn’t have time for that. Dr. Caine asks “Really?” Dr. Giles answers that he does a lot of press. Dr. Caine asks “About neuro?” and says that’s great. Dr. Giles explains it’s more like wellness, nutrition, get 8 hours of sleep and take a walk – that kind of thing. Sometimes he’ll do a photo op in the OR but they don’t want to shoot a real person so they’ll have him cutting into chicken breasts or something. Dr. Caine looks disturbed, Dr. Giles brightens and says he works on the Seahawks. Real guys, not chickens. Dr. Caime remarks that’s good and Dr. Giles says he doesn’t do anything innovative like Dr. Caine used to do but in this economy he’s grateful to have a job. Dr. Caine replies that’s what he says every day about his work on the Board. Dr. Giles asks if they can keep this between them and not get back to the Board. Dr. Caine tells Dr. Caine that nothing he says will ever get to the Board. Dr. Giles leans in, conspiratorial, and asks if now that Dr. Caine isn’t practicing if there’s a job opening.

Grant - Dr. Marsden walks with Angie and the new Board member, Grant. Dr. Marsden asks Angie if this is the guy she mentioned. He introduces himself and asks how’s the tour. Grants says he likes what he sees. Dr. Marsden says he’s glad and to most of them that isn’t just a hospital. It’s an incredible group of people who do inspiring work, it’s home. Grant is eating it up. Dr. Marsden asks if he’s ever seen a human organ up close. Grant says no. Dr. Marsden tells them to come with him, he’s going to give the unofficial tour.

Angie walks Dr. Marsden and Grant to a cleared out wing in the hospital. Angie says they’re hoping to become a destination medical center. Grant remarks that it’s a smart plan and asks how many patients will the space accommodate at a time. Angie answers that once everything is finished, upwards of 30. Grant is impressed.
